What Is Included in an EN 10204 Mill Test Certificate?

A 3.1 certificate is issued by the manufacturing facility's own QC department and is standard on every TeCarve order. It ties directly to the specific heat/batch number of the tubes delivered, and includes chemical composition (re-verified in-house by OES spectrometer against the upstream mill's original mill certificate — TeCarve sources raw material from established Chinese mills such as Tsingshan and TISCO), mechanical property results, dimensions, and the applicable manufacturing standard (e.g. ASTM A312, EN 10216-5).

A 3.2 certificate is available on request for pressure equipment or specified engineering projects: a third-party inspector nominated by the customer (SGS, TÜV Rheinland, or Bureau Veritas) attends the mill in person to witness sampling, mechanical testing, and non-destructive testing, then co-signs the certificate alongside TeCarve's QC lead. It is not automatically included on every order — let us know at inquiry stage if your project requires 3.2.

Does Eddy Current Testing Matter for Tube Quality?

Yes — eddy current testing (ECT) catches surface and near-surface flaws (cracks, pinholes, inclusions) that are invisible to the eye and that a hydrostatic test alone can miss on thin-wall tube. TeCarve runs industrial multi-channel eddy current inspection to ASTM A1016 / ASTM A450 / EN 10246, with automatic demagnetization and defect alarm, on every heat exchanger tube and high-pressure seamless tube batch — this is 100% inline coverage, not spot sampling.

How Is Dimensional Tolerance Verified Before Shipment?

Outer diameter is checked with precision micrometers and vernier calipers; wall thickness is verified with a point micrometer and cross-checked by ultrasonic thickness gauge; tube ends are checked against Go/No-Go gauges; cut length is confirmed with a laser rangefinder plus a high-precision steel tape as a second check. Composition traceability is handled separately — see the mill test certificate section above.

Why Does Pitting Corrosion Happen in Chloride Environments?

Stainless steel resists corrosion because of a thin, self-healing chromium oxide passive film on its surface. Chloride ions can locally break down this passive film, exposing bare metal at a tiny spot. That exposed spot becomes anodic relative to the surrounding intact surface, so corrosion concentrates there instead of spreading evenly — the pit deepens rather than the surface simply thinning, and chlorides tend to concentrate further inside the pit as it grows, which is why pitting can perforate a tube wall faster than uniform corrosion would.

Risk increases with higher chloride concentration, higher temperature, lower pH, and stagnant or evaporating conditions (droplets and waterline zones concentrate chlorides). This is why pitting shows up most often in seawater, brackish water, cooling water, and CIP/SIP cleaning chemical exposure.

Grade selection matters

304/304L is adequate for general, low-chloride service. 316L adds molybdenum, which meaningfully improves pitting and crevice resistance in chloride-bearing environments such as chemical processing, coastal atmosphere, and aggressive CIP/SIP cleaning. For seawater immersion or high-chloride service, duplex grades such as 2205 offer a further step up in pitting and crevice resistance over 316L. TeCarve supplies 304, 304L, 316, 316L, and 2205 duplex tube — contact our team with your fluid chemistry and temperature to confirm the right grade for your service condition.
