Common Causes of Weld Seam Failure

Most weld seam problems in stainless steel welded tube trace back to a small set of root causes: incomplete penetration or lack of fusion (current too low, travel speed too fast, poor arc alignment), burn-through (current too high, gap too large), porosity from contamination or unstable shielding, and root oxidation (“sugaring”) from insufficient backside purge gas. The heat-affected zone around a weld can also become more susceptible to pitting and stress corrosion cracking if the passive layer is disturbed or residual stress is high, so weld quality affects long-term corrosion resistance, not just initial strength.

Because these defects can be subtle, TeCarve inspects every welded tube batch with inline welding integrity testing (Eddy Current or X-Ray) and offers 100% hydrostatic testing on demand, catching incomplete fusion, porosity, and root defects before shipment rather than relying on visual inspection alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is stainless steel welded pipe manufactured?

Stainless steel welded pipe is formed by rolling flat strip into a tube and joining the seam by TIG (GTAW) or laser welding, followed by annealing and bright-annealing for a clean, uniform finish. TeCarve uses automated TIG welding for consistent seam integrity across all production runs.

What grades are available for welded stainless steel pipe?

We supply welded stainless steel pipe in grades 201, 202, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 409, 410, 430, and duplex stainless steel, conforming to ASTM A249, ASTM A269, ASTM A270, ASTM A312, ASTM A554, ASTM A778, EN 10217, EN 10296, EN 10312, DIN 17455, and DIN 11850.

What surface finishes are available for welded stainless steel pipe?

Available finishes: 2B (mill), No. 4 (brushed/satin), No. 8 (mirror), BA (bright annealed), and Ra ≤ 0.8 µm polished for sanitary service. Internal polishing to Ra ≤ 0.4 µm is available for pharmaceutical-grade tube.

What are typical applications for welded stainless steel pipe?

Welded stainless steel pipe is ideal for food processing, dairy, pharmaceutical, water treatment, HVAC, decorative and architectural piping, and low-to-medium-pressure industrial systems where cost efficiency is important.

Can I order custom lengths and wall thicknesses for welded pipe?

Yes. Custom lengths up to 12 m, non-standard wall thicknesses, and end treatments (beveled, plain, threaded, flanged) are available. Minimum order quantities apply for custom specifications; contact TeCarve sales for a quote.
