Marine tubing is selected for compact shipboard routing and continuous exposure to salt-laden air, seawater and changing operating conditions. TeCarve supplies stainless steel tube options for cooling-water circuits, ballast systems, hydraulic lines, exhaust assemblies and offshore equipment, with grade and dimensions matched to the specified duty.

Shipyard and offshore packages also require attention to fabrication access, joining method and project documentation. Tube form, wall thickness, surface condition and inspection requirements should therefore be confirmed against the vessel specification rather than treated as a generic industrial piping order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 316L or duplex 2205 preferred over 304 in marine environments?
Grade 304 lacks molybdenum and can suffer pitting corrosion in marine salt spray and seawater. Grade 316L contains 2.0–3.0% Molybdenum, while duplex 2205 contains 3.0–3.5% Mo, providing enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in seawater environments.
Can TeCarve arrange inspection through maritime inspection bodies like BV?
Yes. We host third-party inspectors from Bureau Veritas (BV) and SGS at our partner factories to conduct pre-shipment quality verification, dimensional checks, hydrostatic test witnessing, and container loading supervision.
What packaging is used to protect marine tubing during ocean transit?
Tubing is fitted with protective end caps, wrapped with plastic film, and packed into seaworthy wooden cases with steel strapping to protect finishes during ocean transit.
What are the MOQ and testing standards for marine piping?
Standard marine tubing starts from 100–300 kg to accommodate shipyard maintenance and retrofits. Tubing complies with ASTM A312 and ASTM A269. Every shipment includes an EN 10204 3.1 MTC with batch PMI verification.

Salt Spray Resistance & PREN Alloy Selection Guide for Marine Piping

Selecting piping alloys for shipboard and offshore duties requires balancing localized pitting resistance, crevice corrosion limits in stagnant seawater, and mechanical yield strength. Review our metallurgical performance matrix comparing 316L, Duplex 2205, and Super Austenitic 904L under ASTM B117 salt spray, ASTM G48 ferric chloride, and actual seawater operating conditions.

Understanding the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN)

PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × (%Mo) + 16 × %N

The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is the universally accepted metallurgical index (referenced in ISO 15156 / NACE MR0175 and NORSOK standards) quantifying a stainless alloy's resistance to localized breakdown of the passive chromium oxide film in chloride-rich marine electrolytes. A higher PREN indicates superior resistance to pitting initiation, higher Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT), and greater resilience against crevice attack beneath marine fouling, biological slimes, or flange gaskets.

Grade 316L (UNS S31603)
PREN 23 – 25

Suited for marine atmospheric exposure, non-submerged superstructure lines, deck fittings, and fresh cooling water circuits. Susceptible to crevice attack in warm or stagnant seawater (> 20°C).

Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205)
PREN 34 – 38

Optimal for seawater ballast systems, bilge piping, and marine fire mains. With double the yield strength of 316L (yield ≥ 450 MPa), 2205 allows significant wall thickness reduction and topside weight savings.

Super Austenitic 904L (UNS N08904)
PREN 34 – 38 (+1.5% Cu)

Engineered for marine exhaust gas scrubbers (EGCS) and acidic washwater circuits. High nickel (25%) and 1.5% copper provide unmatched resistance to sulfuric acid and hot chloride condensates.

Quality Assurance & Marine Standards Compliance:
TeCarve operates under certified ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 management systems. All marine tubing and pipe are supplied with authentic EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates (MTC) verifying heat chemistry, mechanical tensile and yield values, and 100% non-destructive testing (hydrostatic pressure test and ultrasonic / eddy-current testing). Tubing materials are manufactured in full accordance with international marine piping standards (ASTM A312, ASTM A789/A790, ASTM A269, and EN 10216-5), meeting the chemical, mechanical, and testing requirements specified by major classification societies (such as DNV, LR, ABS, BV, and CCS). Third-party inspection and witness testing (SGS, BV, TÜV) are readily accommodated upon client request.
