Dimensions adhere to ASME B36.19M (Sch 80S) and ASME B36.10M (Sch 160 & XXS), furnished under ASTM A312/A312M-21 Section 1.4 non-standard heavy-wall provisions. Note on Wall Thickness Tolerance: per ASTM A312 Table 3, for NPS 3" and larger where the t/D ratio exceeds 5% (all heavy-wall schedules), the allowable positive wall tolerance is strictly tightened to +15.0% (under-wall tolerance strictly capped at −12.5% per ASTM A999 Sec 17). Every heat undergoes mandatory full solution heat treatment (≥1040°C) with rapid water quenching.

Key engineering considerations for high-pressure containment, radial eccentricity control, and cross-sectional thermal treatment.

Technical Engineering Guide
1. High-Pressure Mechanics (Lamé Criteria)

When the wall-to-diameter ratio exceeds 10% ($t/D > 0.1$), thin-wall hoop stress assumptions fail. Thick-wall design requires Lamé's classical thick-cylinder equations where maximum hoop and shear stresses concentrate at the internal bore ($r = r_i$). Under internal pressure, peak bore stress dictates material yield behavior. TeCarve ensures superior internal bore surface integrity, strict straightness, and micro-defect elimination to prevent premature fatigue notch initiation in ultra-high pressure service (up to 100+ MPa / 15,000 psi).

2. Radial Eccentricity Control & Boring

Mannesmann rotary piercing of heavy solid billets inherently induces wall thickness eccentricity up to 10%–12.5% due to mandrel deflection and billet temperature gradients. For critical high-pressure lines and hydraulic cylinders, TeCarve controls radial eccentricity via multi-pass cold pilgering over tapered mandrels or precision deep-hole gun drilling and internal counter-boring, tightening wall uniformity within 5%–7% to eliminate localized stress concentrations.

3. Thermal Quench Dynamics & HCW

Due to the low thermal conductivity of austenitic stainless steel (~15 W/m·K), heavy walls (>15–50 mm) create steep cross-sectional thermal gradients during solution annealing (1040°C–1150°C). To prevent chromium carbide precipitation ($M_{23}C_6$) and sensitization at the mid-wall core, we enforce prolonged soaking times followed by high-velocity agitated water quenching with forced internal bore flushing, cooling the core faster than 55°C/s to ensure uniform intergranular corrosion resistance (ASTM A262 Practice E).

4. 100% Volumetric Ultrasonic Examination

Heavy-wall pressure containment cannot rely on surface inspection alone. Every thick-wall tube undergoes 100% volumetric Ultrasonic Testing (UT per ASTM A388 / EN ISO 10893-10) with longitudinal normal-beam and angle-beam shear waves to detect internal laminations, forging bursts, and sub-surface inclusions. Hydrostatic proof testing up to 50–100+ MPa and through-thickness cryogenic Charpy V-notch impact tests at −196°C verify fracture toughness.

Application Scope: Chemical reactor autoclaves, subsea Christmas trees, high-pressure steam headers, hydraulic rams, and supercritical boiler loops.

Production Capabilities: Workshop Agile Sourcing vs. Primary Mill High-MOQ Batches

Flexible Batch Sizing

Bridging heavy-wall engineering specifications with commercial manufacturing reality: Major state-owned and tier-1 primary mills typically enforce minimum heat batch orders of 3 to 10 metric tons per diameter for heavy schedules (Sch 160 / XXS), often entailing 90–120 day delivery cycles. For custom valve manifolds, hydraulic cylinders, and prototype piping skids requiring flexible batch sizes, TeCarve coordinates agile production across specialized Wenzhou piercing and deep-hole boring workshops—supporting flexible trial orders from 100 to 300 kg. Standard warehouse stock dimensions dispatch within 7–10 days, while custom-machined heavy-wall bores ship within 10–25 days with full heat-batch traceability.

Quality Assurance & Accredited Certification Standards

TeCarve operates under accredited management systems certified by Shanghai Ingeer Certification Assessment Co., Ltd.: ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health & Safety). Every heavy-wall delivery includes authentic EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates detailing exact ladle chemical analysis, through-thickness tensile & yield figures, volumetric non-destructive examination, and pressure verification records. We maintain strict compliance boundaries and explicitly avoid false or unverified certification claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is thick-walled stainless steel pipe?

Thick-walled stainless steel pipe has a wall-to-OD ratio typically above 10%, designed for high-pressure, high-temperature, or high-stress applications. It is produced by cold-drawing or hot-extrusion from solid billets and is used in hydraulic cylinders, pressure vessels, and chemical reactors.

What pressure ratings do thick-walled stainless steel pipes support?

Working pressure depends on OD, wall thickness, and grade. Working pressure should be calculated from OD, wall thickness, grade, design code, temperature, and corrosion allowance for each project. Pressure calculations and hydrostatic test certificates are provided with each order.

What size range is available for thick-walled stainless steel pipe?

Thick-walled stainless steel pipe is available in outer diameter from 6 mm to 2000 mm with wall thickness of 5 mm or above. Grades include 304, 316L, 321, 316Ti, and duplex 2205/2507. Customer drawings with specific bore and OD combinations are accepted.

What standards apply to thick-walled stainless steel pipe?

Our thick-walled pipes comply with ASTM A312, ASTM A358, EN 10216-5, and EN 10217-7. Available testing includes hydrostatic test, ultrasonic inspection (UT), and PMI (positive material identification) per customer project specification.

Which grade is best for high-pressure stainless steel pipe service?

Grade 316L is standard for high-pressure corrosion-resistant service. Grade 321 or 316Ti is recommended above 500°C for stabilized creep resistance. Duplex 2205 offers approximately double the yield strength of 304/316L, enabling thinner walls and lighter weight at equivalent pressure rating.

Does ASTM A312 cover heavy-wall pipes beyond Schedule 80S?

Yes. Heavy-wall pipe exceeding Schedule 80S (up to 59.54 mm wall thickness, NPS 24 Sch 160) is supplied to custom dimensions while satisfying chemical, mechanical, and testing requirements of ASTM A312.

Can TeCarve supply heavy-wall pipes for lathe machining?

Yes. For mechanical hollow bars and machining blanks, we supply OD/ID tolerances to your drawing, ensuring sufficient clean-up allowance for finish machining.

What non-destructive testing is performed on heavy-wall pipes?

Every heavy-wall pipe undergoes NDT per standard or order to ensure internal sound quality. Hydrostatic testing is conducted per standard or customer order specifications, supported by partner factory test benches rated up to 20–30 MPa.
