How to convert psi to MPa

One pound-force per square inch equals 6.894757 kPa, or 0.006894757 MPa. Multiply psi by 0.006894757 to get MPa, or divide by 145.0377.

  • psi to MPa: MPa = psi × 0.006894757
  • MPa to psi: psi = MPa × 145.0377
  • bar to psi: psi = bar × 14.50377 (1 bar = 0.1 MPa)
  • ksi to MPa: MPa = ksi × 6.894757 (1 ksi = 1,000 psi)

Where these units appear in pipe and tube specifications

  • ksi and MPa are used for tensile and yield strength in ASTM tube and pipe specifications, which state both, for example 75 ksi [515 MPa] minimum tensile strength for 304 and 316.
  • psi and kPa are used for test pressures. ASTM A1016, for example, sets a minimum air pressure of 150 psi [1000 kPa] for the air-underwater test of tubing.
  • bar and MPa are used in European practice. PN flange classes in EN 1092-1 are named in bar, so PN 16 corresponds to 16 bar, or 1.6 MPa.

For allowable working pressures of stainless steel pipe by size and schedule, see the stainless steel pipe pressure rating chart, and for dimensions and weights the pipe schedule chart and weight calculator.
