Medical-Component Raw Tubing: Metallurgy, Surface Treatment & Process Control

Engineering guidelines on raw alloy cleanliness, micro-drawing concentricity, electrochemical passivation, and 100% non-destructive examination.

Technical Engineering Guide
1. Alloy Purity & Inclusion Control (ASTM F138)

For critical instrument components and surgical blanks, raw material melt quality dictates fatigue performance. Premium grades like 316LVM (ASTM F138 / ISO 5832-1) undergo Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR). This secondary remelting minimizes non-metallic micro-inclusions (sulfides, aluminates, silicates per ASTM E45 Method A rating ≤ 1.0) and limits sulfur to ≤ 0.010%, eliminating micro-porosity and maximizing cyclic flexural endurance.

2. Micro-Bore Drawing & Concentricity

Diagnostic probes and endoscopic catheter guide lumens require strict inner diameter limits and ultra-smooth bore geometry. TeCarve utilizes multi-pass cold pilgering and precision plug drawing over tungsten carbide floating plugs. This achieves tight outer diameter tolerances (±0.010 to ±0.025 mm), concentricity ≥ 92%, and an unpolished drawn bore roughness Ra ≤ 0.40 μm, preventing laminar fluid turbulence and micro-bubble accumulation in analytical fluidics.

3. Electropolishing (ASTM B912) & Passivation

Electrochemical polishing selectively dissolves microscopic surface asperities under controlled current density and acid electrolytes, reducing surface roughness to Ra ≤ 0.15–0.20 μm (6–8 μin). This process strips mechanically disturbed Beilby layers and enriches surface chromium oxide (Cr/Fe ratio ≥ 1.5). Subsequent ASTM A967 citric/nitric acid passivation removes residual free iron, ensuring robust resistance to physiological saline pitting and repeated autoclave steam cycles.

4. 100% Eddy Current Testing & Traceability
100% In-Line Flaw Detection: Raw tubing undergoes 100% in-line Eddy Current Testing (ET per ASTM E426) with encircling and sector coils to detect longitudinal seams, micro-pinholes, or draw cracks down to 5% of wall thickness.
Heat Traceability: Every production batch is assigned a unique heat code fully traceable to the master melt on the accompanying EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate, documenting the material pedigree from billet to finished blank.
Application Scope: Laparoscopic trocar sleeves, rigid endoscope sheath tubes, needle cannula stock, diagnostic aspiration probes, radiopaque catheter markers, and surgical instrument handle blanks.
