Stainless steel hydraulic tubing provides corrosion-resistant fluid containment for high-pressure hydraulic circuits, subsea lines, and industrial instrumentation. Unlike structural pipe, hydraulic tubing is specified by outside diameter (OD) and nominal wall thickness.

Standard Specification Overview: Stainless steel tubing is commonly ordered to ASTM A269 / A269M (or ASTM A213 for seamless heat-resisting lines). ASTM A269 covers nominal-wall austenitic tubing for general corrosion service; it does not mention “hydraulic” and has no tensile strength table. Pressure capability is calculated by the piping system designer.

1. Governing Specifications: ASTM A269 and Companion Standards

Engineers procuring stainless steel tubing for fluid power circuits reference standardized ASTM tubular specifications:

  • ASTM A269 / A269M-25: Primary standard for seamless and welded austenitic stainless tubing for general service (Clause 1.2: sizes 1/4 in [6.4 mm] ID and larger, wall 0.020 in [0.51 mm] and heavier). See our ASTM A269 stainless steel tubing guide.
  • ASTM A213 / A213M: Covers seamless austenitic boiler, superheater, and heat exchanger tubes.
  • ASTM A249 / A249M: Covers welded austenitic tubes; see our ASTM A249 welded tube guide.
  • ASME B31.3 Note 1: ASTM A269 Note 1 cautions that additional testing may apply when tubing is used in process piping governed by ASME B31.3.

2. Chemical Composition Requirements (ASTM A269 Table 1)

ASTM A269 Table 1 defines chemical limits (percent by weight maximum unless a range is shown) for austenitic grades used in hydraulic lines:

Footnote B: For small OD (<0.500 in [12.7 mm]) or light wall (<0.049 in [1.2 mm] min wall) requiring multiple cold drawing passes, carbon maximum is 0.040% for TP304L and TP316L.

3. Hardness Limits

ASTM A269 controls hardness through heat treatment and a maximum hardness value:

  • Solution Annealing (Clause 6.1): Solution heat-treated at 1900 °F [1040 °C] minimum and water quenched or rapidly cooled.
  • Hardness Limit: ASTM A269 Table 2 caps finished tube hardness at 192 HBW / 200 HV or 90 HRB.
  • Light-Wall Testing (Clauses 11.2 & 11.3): For walls under 0.065 in [1.65 mm], Rockwell superficial or Vickers testing is permitted. Hardness testing is not required below 1/4 in [6.4 mm] ID or wall under 0.020 in [0.51 mm].

4. Dimensional Tolerances and Thin-Wall Ovality (ASTM A269 Table 4)

ASTM A269 Table 4 governs permissible variations in OD, wall thickness, and cut length:

  • Footnote B: Over 24 ft [7.3 m], cut length over-tolerance increases by +1/8 in [3.2 mm] per 10 ft [3 m], up to +1/2 in [13 mm] max.
  • Thin-Wall Ovality (Clause 13.2): For thin-walled tubes (Table 4), OD may deviate up to twice Table 4 tolerance, provided mean OD is within tolerance.
  • Finish (Clause 14.1): Pickled free of scale; omitted when bright annealed.

5. Mandatory Testing and Quality Verification (Section 9 & 10)

ASTM A269 specifies lot mechanical and integrity testing:

  • Flaring Test (Clause 9.1): Seamless: one tube per lot.
  • Flange Test (Clause 9.2): Welded: one tube per lot.
  • Reverse Flattening Test (Clause 9.4): Welded: one test per 1,500 ft [460 m] (coils over 1,500 ft tested at both ends).
  • Hardness (Clause 9.3): Two tubes per lot. Continuous furnace lot sizes (Table 3): ≤50 tubes (OD ≥ 2 in [50 mm], wall ≥ 0.200 in [5.08 mm]); ≤75 tubes (OD 1–2 in); ≤125 tubes (OD ≤ 1 in [25 mm]).
  • Hydrostatic or NDE Test (Clause 10.1): Each tube undergoes NDE (eddy current/ultrasonic) or hydro test, at producer’s option unless specified. NDE-tested tubes are marked “NDE” (Clause 15.2).
  • Supplementary Requirements: S1 (stress-relieved anneal), S2 (pneumatic air-under-water test per ASTM A1016), S3 (stabilizing heat treatment for TP321), and S4 (intergranular corrosion test per ASTM A262 Practice E).

6. Allowable Pressure Ratings for Hydraulic Tubing

Because ASTM A269 contains no pressure tables or tensile values, design pressures must be calculated per engineering codes such as ASME B31.3 Para. 304.1.2.

Allowable working pressures below for ASTM A269 TP316L tubing are quoted from our stainless steel pipe and tube pressure rating chart. Calculations follow ASME B31.3 with allowable stress S = 115 MPa (≤40 °C) and 109 MPa (200 °C), joint factor E = 1.00 (seamless) or 0.80 (welded), c = 0, and a −10% wall undertolerance:

7. Seamless vs. Welded Construction for Hydraulic Lines

ASTM A269 Section 5 permits seamless and welded construction:

  • Seamless Tubing: Produced cold-drawn or cold-rolled without weld seams, providing isotropic hoop strength (ASME B31.3 joint factor E = 1.00). Standard for high-pressure impulse and hydraulic circuits.
  • Welded Tubing: Produced by automatic longitudinal welding without filler metal. Under ASTM A269, welded tubing undergoes mandatory flange and reverse flattening tests to verify weld ductility (ASME B31.3 baseline joint factor E = 0.80).

8. Hydraulic Tubing Purchasing Checklist

Orders referencing ASTM A269 should specify per Clause 3.1:

  1. Quantity: Total length in feet, meters, or pieces.
  2. Construction: Seamless or welded.
  3. Grade: TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, or TP321.
  4. Dimensions: OD and nominal wall thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What standard commonly governs stainless steel hydraulic tubing?

Stainless steel hydraulic and instrumentation tubing is commonly ordered to ASTM A269 (or ASTM A213 for seamless heat-resisting lines), specifying chemical, hardness, dimensional, and testing rules for general corrosion service.

What is the maximum hardness of ASTM A269 tubing?

ASTM A269 Table 2 caps finished tube hardness at 192 HBW / 200 HV or 90 HRB.

Does ASTM A269 specify tensile strength or burst pressure?

No. ASTM A269 contains no tensile table and specifies no burst pressures. Operating pressures must be calculated by the piping system designer using engineering codes such as ASME B31.3.

Can welded stainless steel tubing be used in hydraulic circuits?

Yes. ASTM A269 covers seamless and welded forms. Welded tubes undergo mandatory flange and reverse flattening tests to verify seam ductility, with design pressure calculated using code joint factors.

How does ASTM A269 define thin-walled tubing ovality?

Under Clause 13.2, thin-walled tubes (Table 4) may deviate in maximum and minimum diameter up to twice Table 4 OD tolerance, provided the mean diameter remains within tolerance.
